Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's soccer team opened its 2017 season with a 1-0 loss to NJIT at Park Avenue Field on Friday afternoon.
The Highlanders looked to jump out to an early lead halfway through the opening half as Mamadou Guirassy took a through ball into the Pioneer zone. Sophomore goalkeeper Robert Strain was able to not only save Guirassy's initial shot but also the rebound attempt to hold the game scoreless. NJIT broke the game open in the 52nd minute as Marcus Agnolin found Danny Cordeiro driving to the goal on the right side, Cordeiro fired the ball to the bottom left corner of the net for the 1-0 score. SHU nearly scored the equalizer on a long boot from redshirt senior Kieran Walsh from 30 yards out but the ball ricocheted off the right post.
NJIT outshot the Pioneers 17-2 on the game, with Alejandro Arribas and Walsh recording the Pioneers two shots. Strain registered five saves against the Highlanders.
The Pioneers look to get the offensive momentum going in the first road contest of the season at UMass on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
