
Pioneers Fall To Rival CCSU 26-15 On Homecoming

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart football team opened Northeast Conference play Saturday night with a 26-13 loss to the Central Connecticut Blue Devils at Campus Field for Homecoming.
For the second straight week, Kevin Duke set a career-high in passing yards with 250. The senior quarterback completed 18 of 32 passes, including a 47-yard touchdown pass to Byron Barney, but was intercepted three times. Barney led all players with a career-high seven receptions and 125 yards. Nate Chavious had a team-high 99 rushing yards. Eli Terry added 83 yards. CJ Parvelus and Kevin Barry each had a team-high 11 tackles.
The Turning Point
After falling behind 10-0, Sacred Heart (2-3, 0-1 NEC) got back within a touchdown with a 22-yard field goal by Josh Freiria with 4:24 to play in the first half. CCSU (2-3, 1-0 NEC) then drove 76 yards in three plays, scoring on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Dolegala to Drew Jean-Guillaume with 3:23 to play in the half to take a 16-3 lead.
The Pioneers got back within 10 with 12:18 to play in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard Duke touchdown run making the score 19-9. SHU went for a two-point conversion to make it a one-possession game, but didn't get it. The Blue Devils punted on their next possession, pinning SHU to the 10 yardline. The Pioneers drove to their own 47 before Duke took a shot downfield and was intercepted by Tymir Hinton. CCSU drove all the way down to the SHU 1, but the Pioneers came up with a goal line stand to keep the game 19-9. However, Duke was intercepted again. This time, Jarrod Cann ran the pick back 50 yards for a touchdown to make the score 26-9 with 2:37 to play.

Key Stats And Notes
- SHU allowed a 100-yard rusher (Cameron Nash – 157 yards) for just the fourth time in the last four seasons.
- The Pioneers outgained the Blue Devils 501-420, but had five turnovers.
- Barney had his second-career 100-yard receiving game Saturday night. His first came in last season's NEC opener at Wagner, when he had five receptions for 103 yards.
- SHU rushed for 251 yards, its first 200-yard rushing effort since Sept. 9 at Lafayette.
