Rudis Wins Twice In Dual Win Over Monmouth

The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team earned a 152-115 dual win over Monmouth University at NJIT Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 6-7 in dual action with the victory.

Nikole Rudis was a double winner for the Pioneers, capturing the 100 backstroke and butterfly events. Margaret Flaherty also won twice, earning the top spot in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

The Pioneers wrap-up the dual meet portion of the season on February 3rd at NEC foe St. Francis Brooklyn.

Relays

  • SHU opened the meet with a win in the 400-medley relay, with a swim of 4:13.52, as Anna Brown, Julia Pusateri, Fiona Maxwell and Kim Hylan combined for the victory
  • The Pioneers top-two 200-yard freestyle relays finished .20 second apart at 1:45.68 and 1:45.88, with Lauren Somers 24.50 split the fastest of the event

Diving

  • Nicole Pergolotti posted a career-best in on the 3-meter board, tallying 168.90 points to win the event
  • She recorded 161.40 points on the 1-meter board

Distance

  • Lauren Spencer gave the Pioneers a third-place effort in the 1,000, touching at 11:11.50
  • Flaherty picked up the win in the 500, touching at 5:17.96, nine seconds clear of the runner-up
  • Lindsey Dell'Isolo posted a season-best swim in the 1,000, placing fifth at 11:25.79

Strokes

  • Rudis picked up her first win in the 100-backstroke, pulling away to win at 1:03.60, 1.55 seconds in front of the runner-up
  • Jessica Poole outraced an opponent down the stretch to give SHU the top spot in the 100-breaststroke, with a winning swim of 1:10.40
  • The Pioneers captured the top two spots in the 200-butterfly with Emily Peter winning at 2:16.80 and Meredith Bertoni second at 2:22.23
  • SHU swept the 200-backstroke, behind a winning swim of Hylan at 2:16.43, with Spencer and Chmielewski placing second and third
  • Sarah Hensal touched second in the 200-breastroke at 2:36.18, followed by Pusateri in third with a swim of 2:40.16
  • The win in the 100-butterfly was similar for Rudis, as she jumped out early with a 28.69 opening split on her way to a 1.4 second margin of victory
  • Maxwell posted the top time in the 200 IM, with a swim of 2:17.43, while Hensal had the fourth fastest swim at 2:20.97
  • Kelly Chmielewski (1:05.15) touched out Emily Shenk (1:05.17) for second place and a Pioneer sweep of the top three spots
  • Poole (1:03.44) and Bertoni (1:04.20) finished second and third for the sweep

Sprint Freestyle

  • Somers earned an individual win in the 100-freestyle, touching at 53.03, her third victory of the weekend
  • Peter placed third in the 100 at 57.05
  • Anna Brown gave SHU a third—place finish in the 50, with a 25.94 final time
