Women's Soccer Earns 3-1 Win Over Wagner

The Sacred Heart University women's soccer team earned a Northeast Conference victory, 3-1, over Wagner College Friday afternoon on Park Avenue Field. The Pioneers improve to 3-11-0 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Seahawks fall to 2-11-0 on the year and 1-4 in NEC action.

SHU scored twice in a 2:54 span midway in the second-half, breaking a 1-1 tie. The game-winning tally came off a corner kick that was headed in by Sarah da Silva. Jill Klem cound the back of the net 1:54 later to provide the final margin.

The Pioneers travel to Emmitsburg, Md. Sunday for a 1:00 pm match with NEC foe Mount St. Mary's.

Turning Point

  • SHU used the wind to its advantage in the second-half, pressing Wagner for large portions of the period and allowed just one Seahawk shot in the second stanza
  • The Pioneers broke through with goals at 72:45 and 74:39

First Half

  • Taylor Casale started the scoring for SHU, controlling the ball at the top of the box after a scrum and putting it home on the ground to the near post
  • Maria Nunez controlled Madison Starr's shot off of the cross bar and put the ball inside the near post for the equalizer
  • Wagner had an opportunity in the 32ndminute as Nunez fed Starr on a break off a SHU free kick, but Sambuco came off her line to make the save to keep the game knotted 1-1

Second Half

  • Alyssa Hyland send a corner kick into the box that Alex Mesropyan headed to da Silva for the tiebreaking goal
  • Hannah Busch played a ball from the near sideline across the box that found the foot of Klem and she pushed it inside the post for the tally 
  • Wagner threatened in the 66thminute, with a 1 v. 1 opportunity that the Pioneers defender was able to fend off and turn into a Pioneer goal kick
  • The Seahawks threatened in the 84thminute when Luisa Barone played a curving ball into the box, but her teammate was whistled offsides to negate the chance

By The Numbers

  • Nicole Sambuco earned the win in goal for SHU, making six saves
  • SHU finished with a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and a 13-11 edge in shots – including 7-1 in the second half
  • Wagner outshot the Pioneers 10-6 in the opening half, with Sambuco recording six saves for the Pioneers
  • Wagner goalkeeper Katie Viscardi made five saves on the afternoon
