NEW BRITAIN, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Soccer team defeated Central Connecticut State tonight by a final score of 5-1. The team returns to action on Sunday as they will travel to face Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:00 p.m.
The Pioneers would come out strong in the first half as just 1:48 into the first half, freshman Segundo Navarro would launch a shot passed the goalie to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. Navarro would be done yet though as just three minutes later he would find the back of the net again scoring his fifth goal of the season at 4:17 to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0. Not even two minutes later the team's leading goal scorer Alejandro Arribas would score the third goal of the game off a chip in from freshman Giuseppe Martinelli to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0. Then in the final minutes of the first, sophomore Altin Celaj would close the first half with a penalty kick goal to give SHU a 4-0 lead at the half.
The Blue Devils would attempt a comeback in the second half as they would score a goal off a penalty kick courtesy of Beddouri St. Louis to tighten the Pioneer lead to 4-1 at 47:35. But twenty minutes later, senior Oscar Curras would take the goal right back off an assist by Zander Hyltoft as the cross from Hyltoft from the right side gave Curras the perfect approach to his goal. The Pioneers would hold their 5-1 lead from 63:10 on to give them the team's second Northeast Conference win of the year.
