Box Score 2 NEW BRITAIN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University softball team recorded a shutout in game two to work a series split against CCSU to open Northeast Conference play on Friday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (10-17, 1-1 NEC) took the early lead in game one to earn the 9-6 win. Junior Emily Orosco twirled a five-hit shutout as the Pioneers earned the 1-0 win in game two at CCSU Softball Field.
Game One – CCSU 9, SHU 6
The Scoring…
Bottom of the 1st inning… CCSU got on the board with a one-out single by Lex Debrosse. A hit by pitch and back-to-back walks allowed another run to score. A miscue in the Pioneers infield and an RBI single by Tori Constantin capped the four-run first inning.
Bottom of the 2nd inning… A two-out RBI single by Sydney Bolan brought the CCSU lead to 5-0 in the second.
Bottom of the 3rd inning… The Blue Devils extended the lead as Constantin picked up the two-run home run to left centerfield against Kristen McCann.
Top of the 4th inning… After two quick outs, Hailey Desrosiers started the Pioneers rally with a single to center. A walk and single loaded the bases for Lindsey Spitz and she delivered with a two-RBI single to get SHU on the board. Lauren Delgadillo then drove in a run on the miscue at short before Stephanie Mangiameli ended the inning with an RBI single to right field.
Bottom of the 4th inning… CCSU answered back in the bottom half of the inning on the two-RBI single by Gia Hathaway through the right side with two outs.
Top of the 5th inning… The Pioneers got a big two-out single by Caroline Kruger as she drove in two runs on her third hit of the game.
The Numbers…
- Both teams were tied in the hit column at eight apiece. The Pioneers committed two errors to the Blue Devils one.
- Kruger led SHU with her first career three-hit game to go along with her two runs driven in.
- Shyanne Fennell pitched four innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Game Two – SHU 1, CCSU 0
The Scoring…
Top of the 5th inning… SHU got runners on first and third with one out in the fifth inning. Spitz hit the line drive to third for the fielder's choice that allowed Addison Landry to score from third for the lone run of the game.
The Numbers…
- Both teams recorded the same amount of hits for the second game at five each.
- Kruger continued her strong afternoon with a 2-for-3 showing at the dish.
- Orosco recorded 11 strikeouts in the shutout victory.
Noteworthy...
- SHU has opened up NEC play the last two seasons against CCSU earning the doubleheader split in back-to-back years.
- The Pioneers have recorded six shutout victories on the season.
- With her two-RBI performance in game one, Kruger is tied for the team lead with three two-RBI games this season.
- Orsoco earned her second shutout of the season with the gem in game two.
