Field Hockey Defeats Merrimack 4-0 at Home

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University field hockey team defeated NEC-foe Merrimack at home, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field. Makenna Crawford, Bridget Kelly, Kayla Kruk and Bridget LaRiccia tallied a goal apiece, while goalkeeper Hailey Power tallied 11 saves en route to the third shutout of her career.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 2-11 on the season and 1-1 in the NEC, while the Warriors fall to 2-10 on the season with the loss and 1-2 in the NEC. SHU will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 18 when the Pioneers play host to Bryant at 7 p.m. at Johnson Field.

Scoring

First Quarter

  • (6:19): Makenna Crawford corralled a loose ball in front of the net and put it home to put SHU up 1-0 

Third Quarter 

  • (43:08): Off the penalty insert, Kelsy Hopkins shuffled a pass to Bridget Kelly, who fired the one-timer home for the goal

  • (43:36): Marlena Koellner got loose on a breakaway and fed Kayla Kruk in the circle, who put it past the keeper to put the Pioneers up 3-0

Fourth Quarter

  • (53:54): Bridget LaRiccia corralled a loose ball and shot it into the back of the net for the goal
