
Anosike Leads Men's Basketball to 89-68 Victory Over Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Basketball team picked up its seventh win of the season this afternoon as the Pioneers defeated Holy Cross 89-68. SHU will return to action on Sunday Dec. 29 when the Pioneers host Lafayette. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at the William H. Pitt Center.
First Half
- Sophomore Koreem Ozier led the way for the Pioneers racking up 12 points going 3-7 from the field, 2-4 from three point land and 4-5 from the free-throw line.
- Junior E.J. Anosike followed right behind with 11 points going 5-6 from the field with six rebounds.
- SHU as a team went 19-34 from the field and 5-13 from beyond the arc.
- The defense of the Pioneers proved strong as senior Jare'l Spellman recorded four blocks as the team held the Crusaders to going just 9-30 from the field and 1-8 from three point distance.
- SHU went on countless runs in the opening half as the Pioneers concluded the half on a 11-2 run for the last 4:08 and the Pioneers led 50-21 at the end of the first half.
Second Half
- The Pioneers were able to shoot 16-34 from the field and 5-15 from beyond the arc.
- SHU was able to hold the Crusader offense to just going 17-38 from the field and 5-16 from three point distance.
- SHU jumped out early in the half as senior Kinnon LaRose fired off a three pointer to put the Pioneers ahead 55-23 with just 19:44 left in the half.
- Following the LaRose three, Holy Cross then went on a 7-0 run to cut the SHU lead to 55-30 with 17:47 left in the half.
- The Pioneers continued to fire off shots as with 8:43 left in the half, Anosike made nine of his last 10 buckets to up SHU's lead to 73-47.
- The final blow to the Crusaders came in the final 10 seconds of the game as first-year Tyler Thomas drained a three to eventually give the Pioneers the 89-68 victory.
Notes
- Junior E.J. Anosike led the way for the Pioneers with 19 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and his ninth rebound of the game marked his 500th career rebound.
- Sophomore Koreem Ozier also reached a career milestone reaching 500 career points with 16 points and going 5-11 from the field and 2-6 from beyond the arc.
- First-year Tyler Thomas recorded 17 points which tied his season high as he went 6-10 from the field and 5-7 from three point distance.
- With the win, the Pioneers improve to 7-5 overall on the season which is the best start SHU has had before Northeast Conference play since the 2014-15 season.
