INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA men's ice hockey tournament will return to Connecticut in 2023. On Wednesday, the NCAA Championships Committee awarded a men's ice hockey regional to Sacred Heart University and Yale University. The two institutions will co-host the event at Webster Bank Area in Bridgeport, March 26-27, 2023.
Sacred Heart and Yale are joining forces to host the 2021 East Regional at Webster Bank Arena on March 26-27.
"It is no surprise that Webster Bank was selected to host the 2023 NCAA Regionals," SHU Head Coach CJ Marottolo said. "Webster Bank is a first-class arena that is run by first-class people that fully understand the importance of providing the student-athletes and fans with a terrific in-game experience. I have no doubt they will hit it out of the park!"
The start of the 2020-21 season is just around the corner for the Pioneers as the Atlantic Hockey Association announced Thursday that season will officially start on November 13-14.
Webster Bank has previously hosted five NCAA men's hockey tournaments: In the 2009 East Regional, Vermont advanced to the Frozen Four with overtime win over Air Force; in 2011 Minnesota-Duluth topped Yale in the regional final; Union topped UMass Lowell in Bridgeport to reach the 2012 Frozen Four; two years later, Union defeated Providence en route to winning the national title; and most recently, Notre Dame defeated Providence in the 2018 East Regional final.
