
Women's Ice Hockey Ups Win Streak To Nine With 3-2 Victory Over Franklin Pierce

SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team picked up its ninth straight win this afternoon as the Pioneers completed the two-game sweep of Franklin Pierce winning by a final score of 3-2. The Pioneers will return to action on Friday, Feb 7 when SHU hosts Saint Anselm. Puck-drop is set for 4:00 p.m.
First Period
- The Pioneers and Ravens were all even it shots on goal as both sides fired off 10 shots each.
- SHU struck first in the period as first-year Sophie Lupone cashed in her third goal of the year off an assist by sophomore Kennedy Spiering to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 just 3:19 into the first.
- The scoring didn't stop there for the Pioneers as fellow first-year Rachel DeLong nailed her second goal of the year off an assist by Spiering as well while SHU was on the power-play to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.
- Franklin Pierce was able to squeeze a power-play goal in the closing minutes of the period off the stick of Bridgette Prentiss to narrow the SHU lead to 2-1 heading into the second period.
Second Period
- The Pioneer offensive attack continued in the second period as SHU rocketed 14 shots on goal in the period while holding Franklin Pierce to just seven.
- SHU was the lone team to score in the period as senior captain Maddie Bishop nailed her 10th goal off the year off an assist by Spiering while the Pioneers were on the power-play just 3:39 into the period to take a goal advantage heading into the third period with SHU ahead 3-1.
- After the Bishop goal while shots fired none, slipped in the goal keeping the score 3-1 in favor of SHU.
Third Period
- Franklin Pierce had to come out strong in the third period and they attempted to with 11 shots on goal in the period while holding SHU to just eight.
- Just 4:42 into the period the Ravens narrowed the Pioneers lead to 3-2 off a power-play goal by Kiki Doucette to put the Ravens within one early in the third period.
- But the Pioneers defense was able to hold off an more Raven shots resulting in SHU with a 3-2 win.
Notes
- SHU picks up its ninth straight win of the year and improves to 17-10 overall and 14-2 in NEWHA play.
- Sophomore Kennedy Spiering tallied three assists for three points in the win.
- Sophomore goalie picked up her 15th win of the year recording 26 saves on 28 shots faced.
