How it Happened:
The Pioneers came out firing in the opening 10 minutes of play, outshooting LIU 11-2 and setting the tone early. Sacred Heart continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the period, peppering the Sharks' defense with shots. The Pioneers finished the opening frame with a 21-13 advantage in total shots, while both teams recorded eight shots on goal. On the defensive end, Dalecka and the Pioneer back line stood strong, shutting down every scoring opportunity the Sharks created. Despite the aggressive offensive effort, the game remained scoreless heading into the second period.
The second period was a similar story, as both teams continued to generate quality scoring opportunities, but neither side could find the back of the net. The Pioneers had three power-play opportunities throughout the period, looking to capitalize on the advantage and break the scoreless tie. However, it was the Sharks who struck first, finding the back of the net in the 19th minute of the period to take a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart responded with another power-play opportunity in the final minute of the frame, firing multiple shots toward the net but coming up empty. Despite a strong offensive push, the Pioneers headed into the third period trailing 1-0.
The Pioneers entered the third period determined to find the equalizer, coming out with an aggressive offensive push. Through the first 15 minutes of the frame, Sacred Heart fired 20 shots, including nine on goal, continuing to put pressure on the LIU defense. Despite generating numerous scoring opportunities, the Pioneers were unable to break through. The Sharks eventually doubled their lead, putting Sacred Heart in a 2-0 deficit with just minutes remaining. In a final effort to mount a comeback, the Pioneers pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and created several late scoring chances. However, the LIU defense held strong, preventing Sacred Heart from finding the back of the net.
