How it Happened:Â
The Pioneers came out strong in the opening period, creating several offensive chances while also finding success at the faceoff dot. Maddie Smith led Sacred Heart with four shots, including three on target, while Ally Cohen recorded two shots on goal.Â
Sacred Heart won 14 faceoffs in the opening period, with Ella Holm leading the way with five victories. Sara Gerdel added three wins, while Grayson Limke recorded two.Â
Dalecka provided a strong presence between the pipes, turning aside 11 Providence shots in the first period to keep the Pioneers within reach.Â
Providence increased its offensive pressure in the second period, putting 17 shots on net. Dalecka continued to keep Sacred Heart in the game, making four saves during a Providence power play and finishing the period with 17 total saves.Â
The Pioneers once again held the advantage in the faceoff circle during the middle frame, winning 14 draws. Holm continued to lead the way, collecting six faceoff wins during the period.Â
Sacred Heart entered the final period looking to generate a spark, but Providence came out with sustained pressure. The Friars opened the scoring 6:24 into the third period before adding another goal just over two minutes later at the 8:32 mark.Â
Providence continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the period, finding the back of the net once more at 15:47 to take a 3-0 lead.Â
Dalecka continued to battle in goal, making 10 saves during the third period as Providence finished the frame with a 30-14 advantage in shots.Â
Smith finished the afternoon with a team-high seven shots, while Ranaudo and Downey each recorded four. Ranaudo and Holm each had four shots blocked.Â
Holm paced the Pioneers at the dot throughout the afternoon, finishing with 14 faceoff wins.Â
