
Swimming and Diving Sits In Seventh Place After Day One At NEC Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team opened its 2020 Northeast Conference Championship with the 200 Medley Relay and the 800 Free Style Relay finals. Through the first two events of the four-day championship, at Nassau County Aquatic Center the Pioneers have 50 points and are in seventh-place in the team standings.
SHU's best relay team was in SHU's A relay which took sixth place in which Taylor Eck kicked off the relay in the 50 meter back stroke touching the wall with a time of 27:59. Then in the 100 breaststroke leg, Jillian Pusateri hit the wall with a time of 30.54. Emily Peter followed up on the 150 butterfly with a time of 25.85 with senior Lauren Somers closing out the swim with a split 23.33 in the freestyle leg and an overall time of 1:47.31 which beat the record breaking swim in the 2017 Championships.
SHU's B relay which consisted on Ashley Ayala, Fiona Maxwell, Nikole Rudis and Alivia Gibson finished with a time of 1:51.74 as Ayala tallied a split in the 50 back with a time of 28.92 while Maxwell recorded a split of 31.17 in the 100 breaststroke followed by Rudis with a split of 26.85 in the 150 butterfly while Gibson closed out with a 24.80 split in the 200 free.
Lauren Somers led off the Pioneers 800-freestyle relay with a swim of 1:54.24 and was followed by a 1:56.45 split from Grace Bergstrom. Margaret Flaherty swam a 1:57.77 in the third leg and Nicole Tingley brought the relay home in seventh-place, with a final time of 7:43.45 after a 1:54.99 split.
Bryant University completed the opening day with 80 points and a 12-point lead over Central Connecticut State. LIU Brooklyn and Wagner are in second place tied with 62 points, Saint Francis U and St. Francis Brooklyn sit in fifth and sixth as SFU has 54 with SFC has 52 points. SHU sits 10 points ahead of Merrimack which has 40 and Mount Saint Mary's rounds out the leader board in ninth place with 22 points.
Preliminary heats in the 500-freestyle, 200 IM, 50-freestlye, 200-freestyle relay and 1-meter diving begins Thursday morning at 10:00am.
