BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Swimming and Diving team concluded the regular season on a high note this afternoon as they defeated St. Francis Brookyln this afternoon by a final score of 155-144. The Pioneers now set their eyes on the Northeast Conference Championships which kick off on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m.
In diving, sophomore Molly Martin led the way as she won both the 1meter and 3meter dives with scores of 221.25 on 1 meter and 244.60 on 3 meter. Her score on the 3 meter set a new team record.
In swimming, senior Lauren Somers took first in the three events coming in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:55.47 followed by crushing the 100 meter free with a time of 54.20 and lastly taking the 50 free with a time of 25.33.
First year Casey Barrett took first in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:01.91 while fellow first year Kelly Bartnett took first in the 200 meter backstroke with a touchtime of 2:14.05. First-year Ashley Ayala placed right behind Bartnett in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.80.
Junior Emily Peter also had a first place finish coming in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:00.72. Sophomore Nicole Tingley took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.85 as fellow teammate Ayala took second with a time of 2:17.95.
What sealed the victory for the Pioneers was in the relays as the team of Kelly Bartnett, Casey Barrett, Emily Peter and Lauren Somers took first in the 200 freestyle relay as they won with a time of 1:41.26. The B relay of the Fiona Maxwell, Nikole Rudis, Julia Pusateri and Grace Bergstrom took third with a time of 1:45.44 in the event rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers.
