The Sacred Heart University baseball team opened up its weekend in North Carolina with its second victory of the season, taking a 2-1 decision over Brown at Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C. 

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday morning when they take on La Salle in a neutral site game with first pitch slated for 10:00 a.m. 

Pitching Lines

• Junior right hander Ryan LaMay earned his first victory of the season in his second start of the year
• The Washington Depot, Conn. native surrendered a single earned run on three hits across seven innings of work
• He faced a total of 24 batters without allowing a walk while striking out a pair
• Junior righty Matt Aufiero earned his first save of the season, throwing two shutout innings, facing one batter over his minimum
• Overall, the closer allowed a pair of hits and struck out one batter

At the Plate

• The Pioneers scattered eight hits across the Bears two pitchers, tagging opener Garett Delano for seven hits
• Overall six of the eight hits came from two different batters with leadoff hitter, sophomore Justin Jordan, and shortstop Sam Mongelli each scattering a trio of base knocks, while also each successfully swiping a base
• The pair also finished with one RBI apiece, while Mongelli smacked a pair of extra base hits, his third double of the season and his first home run of the year 
• Right fielder Kyle Oliver and left fielder Isiah Daubon each finished with a single hit on the day to round out the Pioneers at the plate

How it Happened

• After a pair of innings that stranded three runners on base, the Pioneers put the first tally on the board in the bottom of the third when Jordan led of the frame with his first home run of the year, driving this one over the right field fence
• LaMay would respond to that lead by retiring the Bears in order over the next three frames, while his offense would come through again in the sixth inning
• With a pair of outs already in the books, Mongello, would come up clutch adding an insurance run with his first long ball of the year, drilling his shot over the fence in left field
• The Bears would look to rally in the top of the next frame when catcher Park Phillips went yard to cut the Pioneers advantage in half
• LaMay responded by retiring the next two batters on routine groundouts to third and short
• Aufiero surrendered leadoff hits in the eighth and ninth innings, but in both instances never allowed that runner past first base, earning his squads first save of the season
