FAIRFIELD, Conn.- Sacred Heart University Football junior running-back Julius Chestnut was named to the 2020 Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America Second-Team this afternoon.
The 2020 Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-America Team, announced Wednesday, features 101 players from 56 schools and all 13 FCS conferences. The schools include those playing this fall or in the spring.
The many players making grad transfers to FBS programs reflect how FCS players are in demand, but the preseason All-America team included 30 who were 2019 postseason selections, led by 11 first-team returnees.
Chestnut is the only player from the Northeast Conference to appear on the Preseason All-America Second-Team. He was also named to the 2020 FCS Hero Sports Preseason All-American Third-Team and was named to the All-NEC Football Preseason Team earlier this summer.
Chestnut is coming off an impressive sophomore year being named to the All-NEC First-Team along with First-Team All-ECAC and All-New England honors as well. After being named the 2018 NEC Rookie of the Year, he followed with a breakout 2019 campaign which stands as one of the top individual seasons in program history.
Chestnut tallied 1,495 rushing yards which ranked second in all of FCS and the second-highest single-season total in school history. A true powerhouse, Chestnut carried an FCS-high 293 times which sets a SHU single-season record while he tallied nine 100+ yard games in 12 appearances in 2019.
He compiled nine games with 100+ yards on the ground including four straight to end the 2019 season. He added 179 receiving yards on 14 catches to give him 1,674 total yards from scrimmage in 12 games which also ranks second-most in school history. His top individual performance in 2019 came on the road at Bryant as he carried a SHU Division I record (since 1999) 43 times for a career-high 203 yards, becoming the ninth Pioneer in school history to gain 200+ yards on the ground.
