Junior is first SHU recipient since 2013
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – For four quarters on Saturday, Sacred Heart University junior Malik Grant ran all over Merrimack. Sunday he was recognized by the New England Football Writers Association with its Gold Helmet Award, presented by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
A native of the Bronx, NY, Grant is the first Pioneer to win the weekly honors since R.J. Noel on September 4, 2013. Brendan Costa from Bates College was the College Division recipient.
In the 20-10 win over the Warriors during Homecoming, Grant rushed for a career-high 268 yards on 27 carries. It's the fourth-highest total in school history and the second-most in FCS this year. That performance vaulted Grant up the national rankings to number two with 710 rushing yards and third at 118.4 yards per game.
Sacred Heart continues its home stand against Central Connecticut State Saturday at 1 p.m.
