Running back leads the country in rushing yards.
SOMERSET, N.J. – Back-to-back Northeast Conference victories have translated to consecutive weeks of NEC awards for the Sacred Heart University football team. Running back Malik Grant picked up Offensive Player of the Week and punter Noah Gettman garnered Special Teams Player of the Week as announced by the league office.
Grant earned his second award in as many weeks and his third of the season. The accolade is the first of the season for Gettman, but the fourth of his career. Grant split the award with Merrimack's Westin Elliott. Elliott's teammate Nick Martino was named Defensive Player of the Week and Zevi Eckhaus from Bryant earned Rookie of the Week.
A native of the Bronx, NY, Grant spearheaded SHU's 27-17 comeback victory against Central Connecticut State on Saturday by scoring three-straight touchdowns. He finished the day with 186 rushing yards and 211 yards of total offense thanks to a 25-yard reception. Grant leads the NCAA with 853 rushing yards and is second at 121.9 yards per game.
Gettman is the top punter in the conference at 39.8 yards per punt after averaging 48.0 ypp against CCSU. The Daytona Beach, Fla. native tied his season-long with a 52-yard punt and pinned the Blue Devils in at their own four-yard line with another. Central fumbled on the ensuing play and on the next snap SHU took a 13-10 lead on Grant's first score.
The Pioneers wrap up a three-game home stand October 23 against Duquesne at 12 p.m.
