Women’s basketball selected to finish fourth
SOMERSET, N.J.— The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced by the conference on Wednesday.
"We are thankful to continue to be selected as one of the top teams in the NEC," said Mannetti. "Our program standards remain high and we are always striving to not only continue to do better, but to put ourselves in contention for an NEC championship."
Defending champion Mount St. Mary's was unanimously picked to repeat. Wagner and Saint Francis completed the top three.
Adrianne Hagood, who returns for her fifth year, was selected to the All-NEC Preseason Team. She led the Pioneers last season in scoring with 13.6 points per game and landed a spot on the Second-Team All-NEC.
"I am so proud of Dri and am grateful that the coaches have recognized her as one of the top players in the conference," said Mannetti. "Dri is a special player, and she should feel confident knowing that her hard work and dedication to making both herself and her team better shine through in how she plays. I know she is excited to play her best basketball in her final season!"
Sacred Heart returns a majority of the squad and welcomes three newcomers. In addition to Hagood, Nikki Johnson and Kelsey Wood are also returning. Johnson, who was named Third-Team All-NEC, led the Pioneers with 3.7 assists per game. Wood was the team's rebounding leader with 7.0 per game and earned a spot on the NEC All-Rookie Team.
The Pioneers finished the 2020-21 season 8-10 overall and fifth place in the NEC with a record of 8-8.
