
Men's Ice Hockey Earns Two Points Over Mercyhurst

Ryan Steele scored the shootout game-winner
ERIE, Pa.- The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie but earned the extra point after winning the shootout over Mercyhurst.
"I was really proud of our group tonight in terms of how they handled the momentum swings within our game" stated head coach C.J. Marottolo. Our guys battled hard until the end and earned two points against a dynamic Mercyhurst team."
Marottolo added, "we were able to gain some momentum late and score the tying goal after a big penalty kill. I thought both goalies played really well and we were fortunate to get one in the shootout and hold them off the board."

Of Note
- Senior Austin Magera got the scoring started for the Pioneers just 4:21 into the first period with his third goal of the season off assists by Rourke Russell and Braeden Tuck. With Russell's assist, he tallied his first points as a Pioneer.
- Just 0:36 seconds into the second period, graduate-student Dante Palecco scored his first goal as a Pioneer off feeds by Andrius Kulbis-Marino and Logan Britt to give SHU a 2-0 lead.
- Mercyhurst did respond in the second with a goal by Steven Ipri to send the game into the final period with the score 2-1.
- Then in the third period, Mercyhurst would come back to take the lead with a pair of goals before Braeden Tuck tied the game up at 16:30 in the period to send the game into overtime with the score at 3-3.
- No team would score in the overtime period sending the game into a shootout where Ryan Steele would score the shootout victory goal to give the Pioneers the team's first shootout victory of season.
