Former Women’s Ice Hockey Defender Amie Varano and the Italian national team aspire to make the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey alum Amie Varano '17, will compete in the final round of the 2022 Winter Olympic Qualification in Fussen, Germany on November 11-14 with the Italian women's national team.
"Amie was the ideal NCAA Division I student-athlete hockey player," head coach Thomas O'Malley stated when asked about Varano's Pioneer journey. "Amie always went above and beyond to be a great teammate, friend and leader."
The former team captain began her international hockey career after graduation when she joined the European Women's Hockey League KMH Budapest, which she called home until 2019. Following her time in Hungary, she has been a staple on Italy's Bolzano Eagles roster.
Varano has participated in four playoffs while overseas for a total of 10 games, where she notched two goals and an assist. During her career internationally, she played in 75 regular-season games and recorded 12 goals and 17 assists.
"As her coach, I always knew I could count on getting her very best every day," O'Malley added. "It is no surprise where she is today, and on behalf of her former teammates, our current team, and coaches, we wish Amie the very best. We will be cheering her on."
In her four years at SHU, the Duxbury, Mass. native competed in 106 games to tally 11 goals and 25 assists. Varano was the team's captain her senior year during the 2016-17 campaign.
The defender had a hand in delivering O'Malley's 100th career win as the Pioneers head coach in a 4-0 shutout at home against SUNY Canton on November 14, 2014. The date also marked the first home game for the program at their current rink at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
Varano's last year on the Red & White was the final year the program was housed under the Division I Independent conference before it's leap to NEWHA the following season.
She made it to four postseasons: two in both the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Tournament and New England Hockey Conference Open Tournament.
Varanao helped secure a third-place finish on a converted penalty in the 2-1 shootout against Franklin Pierce in the NEHC Semi-Finals after the teams tied in the Consolation Round on February 26, 2017.
She and her family remain closely connected to the team at Sacred Heart, which helped her achieve her current spot on professional ice.
