Box Score NORTH HAVEN, Conn. — For the second Northeast Conference matchup of the season, the Sacred Heart University men's tennis team narrowly lost 4-3 at Merrimack on Saturday. The Pioneers drop to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the league, while the Warriors improve 1-4 and 1-0 in the NEC.
Junior Kevin Chao dominated his matchups going 2-0, winning at number three doubles with Ayman Khan and his solo fight against Merrimack's Andre Singer. Chao faced a tough opponent in singles, losing his first set, 4-6, but prevailed in the final two, 6-4.
The Pioneers swept doubles with victories from the number one duo William Wibmer and Cameron Goldstein, followed by the number two pair of Lefteri Apostolou and Tyler Lowe.
Senior Lucca Casalduc Pla was the only other Pioneer to tally a point in singles, with the Warriors winning the other four.
Goldstein also faced stiff competition against Merrimack's Aryaan Bhatia with a 7-5 defeat in the first set, a tiebreaking 7-6 (4) win in the second but fell 6-0 in the final match.
The Pioneers travel to conference rival St. Francis Brooklyn on March 17 for a 1 p.m. meet.
