Pioneers Fall 17-10 Against CCSU in First Round of NEC Championship

Box Score

NORWICH, Conn. — A six-run eighth inning wasn't enough for the Sacred Heart University baseball program to secure the win in a 17-10 loss against Central Connecticut State in the opening round of the Northeast Conference Championship.

Records:

Sacred Heart: 22-24

Central Connecticut: 25-12

Statistical Leaders:

Austin Markmann (SHU): 2-5, 1R, 1HR, 2RBI

Joe Emerson (SHU): 2-5, 2R, 1RBI

Buddy Dewaine (CCSU): 3-4, 1R, 1HR 5RBI

Of Note:

• The offense heated up in the top of the eighth with six runs to cut the deficit to four, as the Pioneers trailed the Blue Devils 14-10. Justin Jordan ignited the spark after reaching first on an error from third base to drive in Joe Emerson.

• To lead off the Pioneer scoring, Austin Markmann kissed the ball over the left field fence for his first postseason home run in the first inning.

• CCSU did most of its damage in the first three innings, including an eight-run second inning.

Up Next:

SHU will compete in the elimination game against Long Island at 10 a.m. on Friday.
