Pioneers begin conference play at LIU on December 29
SOMERSET, NJ— The Northeast Conference unveiled its 2021-22 women's basketball schedule on Tuesday. The schedule returns to a normal home-at-home format after playing both games at one site on back-to-back days last season due to COVID-19.
"NEC Conference play is always an exciting time for our program", said head coach Jessica Mannetti, "There is tremendous energy throughout the conference as each team competes to win the Gold Ball and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. Our program looks forward to continuing our tradition of excellence in the NEC as we prepare for an exciting and competitive season ahead."
The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team opens the conference slate at LIU on December 29, before its home opener at the Pitt Center against Bryant on December 31. The Pioneers will also have a date with defending champion Mount Saint Mary's on their home court on January 21 and again in Emmitsburg, Md. on February 24. Last season, Sacred Heart upset Mount Saint Mary's, 79-71, at the Pitt Center in game two of a two-game series.
The Pioneers return familiar faces to the team including Third-Team All-NEC member Nikki Johnson and All-Rookie Team member Kelsey Wood. The duo were two of the top three scores on the team during the 2020-21 season, as Johnson averaged 10.8 points per game and Wood with 8.7. Wood also led the team with 7.0 rebounds per game while Johnson dished out a team-leading 67 assists.
The NEC Tournament begins March 7 with a return to its normal format, consisting of the top-six eight teams instead of the top-four from the previous season.
Sacred Heart fans can catch the Pioneers in conference action at the Pitt Center against Bryant (December 31), Central Connecticut State (January 6), Wagner (January 8), Mount Saint Mary's (January 21), Saint Francis (January 23), LIU (February 3), St. Francis Brooklyn (February 5), Merrimack (February 19) and Fairleigh-Dickinson (March 3).
