
Women’s Ice Hockey Opens the 2021-22 Season Friday

Pioneers kick off winter season with a two-day stint at Clarkson starting at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m.
SHELTON, Conn. — After an abbreviated spring season, the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey program will compete in its first full winter season since 2019-20. The Pioneers have their first puck drop on September 24 at 6 p.m. at Clarkson. SHU will host NEWHA opponent Saint Michael's on October 2 for the home-opener at 5:30 p.m.
This season marks the final year that the Pioneers will compete off campus at the Sports Center of Connecticut. The Martire Family Arena on West Campus is set to open on January 23.
The team welcomes seven new faces to the 29-woman roster, featuring John Carlton Memorial winner, Kerryn O'Connell. Among the veterans hitting the ice, SHU posts eight seniors, including co-captains Anna Klein and Kelly Solak.
Returning in the net for the Pioneers is goalie Frankie Sanchez, who recorded a career-high 72 saves at Robert Morris on February 20 and led the league with 459 saves.
In her first year, Paige McNeil led the Pioneers and ranked fourth in points (11) and third in goals (4). The Shakopee, Minn. native netted two of her four goals in a 3-1 victory over LIU for the lone win of the season.
Twenty-four of Sacred Heart's 32-game slate will feature a conference opponent. Among the six non-conference contests, The Pioneers will compete in the Nutmeg Cup slated for November 26-27 hosted by in-state foe, UConn. The Red & White battle the Huskies on the first day, which will determine the matchup for the second day of the tournament.
Following the home-opener, SHU plays 10 more conference games before the two-day tournament at UConn. The team will face the Pioneers will endure a 10-game conference stretch as they prepare for the in-state tournament.
The second half of the season starts with five non-conference contests against Johnson & Wales (Dec. 3-4), Yale (Jan. 4) and RIT (Jan. 7-8). SHU rounds out the season with 13 NEWHA matchups. The final two-game series against Franklin Pierce on February 25-26 is the only time the two teams meet.
