No. 13 Pioneers Upset #4 McKendree at Adrian Duals

ADRIAN, MICH. – Facing tough competition at the Adrian Open, the Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team more than held its own. The 13th-ranked Pioneers picked up a pair of victories, including a win over number four McKendree on Saturday.
SHU started the day with a 22-19 win over Indiana Tech then stopped the fourth-ranked Bearcats, 24-19. The Pioneers fell, 31-15, to the host, and 14th-ranked, Adrian and completed the day with a 41-6 loss to the number one team in the country, North Central College.
Sacred Heart used a late surge to defeat the No. 4 Bearcats. After rookie Ahsia Torres pinned seventh-ranked Pauline Granados at 109 pounds and Nohea Moniz won at 116 pounds, MU won the next three matches. A forfeit at 143 pounds and Madison Sandquist pin at 155 pounds put SHU ahead 19-16. The Bearcats won at 170 pounds but had to forfeit at 191 pounds, giving the Pioneers the win.
Sacred Heart found itself down 13-1 after four bouts in its opening match against Indiana Tech. Alexandra Fitzgerald started the comeback with a pin at 130 pounds. The Pioneers won the last four matches to cap the comeback, including a pin by Sandquist at 155 pounds and Cara Broadus came through with a tech fall in the last match at 191 pounds to get the victory.
SHU couldn't hold onto an early lead against the host Adrian. Aaliyah Payne-Parris picked up a tech fall over Miley Perkins at 101 pounds. Torres followed at 109 pounds with a pin of Angel Winters in 41 seconds. The Bulldogs would win the next six matches to build an insurmountable lead. Sixth-ranked Jacklyn Smith did come through with an 18-second pin at 170 pounds.
In the final contest of the day, the top-ranked Cardinal were too much for the Pioneers. The match started out well with Aaliyah Payne-Parris getting a pin over Karina Torres. Unfortunately, SHU would only get one more point the rest of the meet.
The Pioneers stay in Michigan on Sunday for the Adrian Open.
