SHU Competes in Most Elite Tournament of the Season

Pioneers finish 11th among top nationally ranked programs at the Prairie View Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team competed in the most elite field of competitors at the Prairie View Invitational hosted by Prairie View A&M over the weekend. The Pioneers finished 11^th out of 12 teams and posted a 2-9 record during the three-day tournament.

The tournament included eight of the top 10 nationally ranked programs, and three of the top-five finishers at Prairie View are ranked first, second, and third in the country according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association.

The first day of the tournament consisted of five total pinfall baker matches. Sacred Heart fell narrowly in the five matches to Vanderbilt (1,057-885), Arkansas (974-855), Sam Houston State (986-910), Prairie View (926-918), and McKendree (928-915).

SHU bounced back in day two wins in a five-person team game. The Pioneers kicked off the day with a convincing 1,025-914 victory over Louisiana Tech. Both Colby Jones and Hannah Manetta led the Red & White during the match as they each broke 200. Jones posted a score of 231 while Manetta chipped in 224. Despite a team-high 267 by Jones, the Pioneers fell to Nebraska, 1,067-1,048 in game two. SHU fell in three more to Fairleigh Dickinson (964-878), North Carolina A&T (1,122-958) and Youngstown (954-926) before ending the day on a high note against Tulane. SHU topped the Green Wave, 951-910, led by first-year Nancy Kohut who posted a score of 228.

The final day was the tournament bracket round which consisted of two baker system match play matches. The Pioneers took two games over Tulane but ultimately fell, 4-2, before a tight 4.5-3.5 victory over Prairie View to claim 11^th in the tournament.

Jones led the Pioneers over the course of the weekend and ranked 19^th among individual competitors. The graduate student totaled 1,242 points for an average of 207.0 across six games.

SHU is back in action on February 5 for a weekend of Northeast Conference play in Mount Joy, Pa.
