Pioneers roll past Hiram College.
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – In a warmup for next week's regional championship, the Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team was on the road Sunday at the Lock Haven Quad. The No. 14 Pioneers defeated Hiram College, 25-9, but fell to East Stroudsburg, 25-17.
SHU finished the dual meet portion of its inaugural season with a 6-4 mark.
The Pioneers were in a 9-0 hole against Hiram, but rallied to win the last five bouts. Sacred Heart picked up a trio of forfeits to take a 15-9 lead.
Jacklyn Smith got her second pin of the day as she topped Kinora Hayes in just 47 seconds of their 170-pound bout. Sixth-ranked Ashley Reed only need 49 seconds to pin JoRee Ybarra at 191 pounds.
A trio of forfeits and a tech fall at the start of the match put SHU behind East Stroudsburg, 19-0. Savannah Vanase got the Pioneers on the board with a 12-2 tech fall at 136 pounds over Avery Meyers.
Sacred Heart won the last three matches, but it wasn't enough to catch the Warriors. At 155 pounds, Madison Sandquist pinned Rachel DeGiulio in just 48 seconds. Smith pinned Bri Simsic in 1:07 and Reed was a 6-0 winner.
The National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coaches Regional Championship is set for February 20 at Gannon University in Erie, Pa.
