Track & Field Claims Top 5 Spots on Day 1 of NEC Championships

Three Pioneers earn second place
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University women's and men's track & field teams had a solid outing on day one of the Northeast Conference Indoor Championships at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Center on Sunday.
The women are tied for first place with LIU on a score of 24 points. The men currently stand in fourth with 16 points.
In the shot put, Abbie Mokwuah earned the silver with a 12.77m throw. Samantha Curran (11.90m) and Sarah Mitchell (11.90m) placed eighth and ninth, respectively.
Kaylee Stenderowicz posted a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a 5.24m leap while Madeline Archangelo claimed sixth at a season best 5.22m. In the pole vault, Jenna Engels notched fifth at 3.30m, followed by Sydney Abitanto in seventh at 3.30m and Jennifer Pasram in eighth at 3.20m.
Sacred Heart saw three Pioneers qualify for the finals in the running events. Nicole Szilagyi (2nd, 9.06) and Kimora Johnson (8th, 9.30) earned a spot in the 60m hurdles. Maya Mocarski ran a time of 7.88 to qualify sixth in the 60m dash. Alexa Kavarsky placed seventh in the 500m dash at a personal best time of 1:20.29.
On the men's side, Cameron Croce (weight throw, 17.91m) and Owen Nassaney (high jump, 2.08m PR) earned silver in their events. Both also earned a spot at the ECAC/IC4A Championship.
Lance Hayes qualified for the 500m dash with an eighth-place finish at 1:06.85.
Sacred Heart wraps up the NEC Championships on Monday at 9 a.m.
