Sandquist and Vanase finish third.
GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team had a strong showing at the Lady Saints Open, hosted by Limestone University. All four Pioneers in action placed in the top five.
It was an all-Sacred Heart match in the third-place bout of 143 pounds as Madison Sandquist took on Temi Sanusi. Ninth-ranked Sandquist prevailed, 7-3.
Sandquist started the day with a 10-0 tech fall over Liberty's Claudia Keanini. She lost in the semifinals, but came back to record a 10-0 tech fall versus Emmanuel's Gianna Anaya. Sanusi fell in her opening contest, but rebounded with three-straight decisions to make her way into the third-place match.
Savannah Vanase dropped her opening match at 136 pounds to second-ranked Ana Luciano of King, but rebounded by pinning Emory & Henry's Madeline Quiroga in 1:57. She secured a third-place finish by beating Limestone's Kathe Wilken-Yoder, 7-4.
The 191-pound weight class was competed in a round-robin format instead of the traditional bracket. Ashley Reed defeated Andreia Langley of Emory & Henry on her way to a fourth-place finish.
The Pioneers are back on the mat February 13 at Lock Haven.
