SHU Ends Season In 66-58 Loss at FDU

Bergdorf and Smith finish in double-figures with 13 and 11 respectively

HACKENSACK, N.J..— The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team gave it all they it had but fell short at Fairleigh Dickinson in the Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinals, 66-58, on Monday.

Of Note
With 4:25 left in the second quarter, Nikki Johnson's layup sparked a 7-0 run for Sacred Heart and cut FDU's lead to 21-20. The Knights responded with four-straight points on their way to a 27-22 halftime lead. 

Maiya Bergdorf tallied back-to-back layups at the start of the third quarter to bring the score within, 27-26. FDU posted back-to-back threes at the 5:47 mark to extend its lead 42-33. Bergdorf notched another layup and Sacred Heart went on a 7-2 run to end the third quarter down 50-45. Sacred Heart shot 76.9 percent from the floor in the third period. 

Tucker's layup sparked a 7-0 run to tie the game at 52. Sacred Heart could not complete the comeback as Smith missed two free throws and FDU pulled away with a 7-0 run at the 3:54 mark.

Bergdorf led in double-figures for the second time this season with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Sonia Smith finished with 11 points and four assists.

FDU held the advantage from the free-throw line as it shot 10-of-15 (66.7%) compared to Sacred Heart's 6-of-12 (50%). The Knights scored 18 points off 13 Pioneer turnovers and grabbed 12 offensive rebounds that turned into 12 points.

Head coach Jessica Mannetti will need to replace a trio of senior starters, but does return Smith, Tucker and Bergdorf along with Carly Stroemel and Kelsey Wood
