TRENTON, N.J. — A third inning rally to cut the deficit to three wasn't enough for the Sacred Heart University baseball team at Wagner on Saturday. After a seven-run second inning for the Seahawks, the Pioneers dropped a close 8-7 contest.

Sutherland ignited the scoring with a single to right center and allowed
Ryan Donnelly to notch the first run of the game in the opening inning. The graduate transfer hit 3 for 5 with a run and a pair of RBIs. In his first year in the Red & White, Donnelly went 2-3 with a pair of runs for the senior transfer's fourth multi-run game of the season.
Farruggio in the number two spot as the designated hitter, went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
In the third inning with the bases loaded, Farruggio scored after
Joe Emerson was hit by a pitch to shift the runners. One batter later,
Ryan Donnelly capitalized off a wild pitch.
Sutherland tallied a run off of a passed ball as
Dante D'amore walked. In the next frame, Sutherland drove in Farruggio's second run of the day for the East Northport, N.Y. native's second RBI.
To put the Pioneers within one,
Justin Jordan crossed the plate from Farruggio's sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Dante D'amore extended his five-game hitting streak with a double to right field to bring home
Justin Jordan in the top of the seventh.
The bulk of the score for the home team came in the second inning, which saw seven Seahawks cross the plate. Wagner padded the lead with a single run in the sixth.
