
Men’s Ice Hockey Announces 2022-23 Leadership Group

Braeden Tuck and Ryan Steele will captain the Pioneers
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team announced the captains for the 2022-2023 season at their team banquet on Sunday. Braeden Tuck and Ryan Steele will serve as the teams captains for the upcoming season. Todd Goehring, Patrick Dawson and Neil Shea will serve as assistant captains.
"We feel our leadership group is perfect to lead our team" stated head coach C.J. Marottolo. "They are all young men that have great purpose and pride which will help elevate our group on all levels."
Tuck tallied a season-high in goals during the 2021-22 season as he led the Pioneers and ranked fourth in Atlantic Hockey. He totaled 15 assists and tied for third in the AHA in total points with 27. The junior captain was been named to the All-AHA list three-straight times in his career and was a named Rookie of the Year in 2019-20 with a season-high 23 assists.
Steele played in 34 games with the Pioneers in 2021-22 as he recorded 10 goals and 11 assists. During his career at SHU, he skated in 122 games and tallied 31 goals and 43 assists. In his rookie season he tied for sixth in the AHA in freshman scoring with a 10 goal, 11 assist showing.
Shea, a transfer from Northeastern, posted his best season to date as he led the Pioneers with 31 points off 11 goals and 20 assists. The Marshfield, Mass. native recorded a total of seven multi-point games with his most recent coming against RIT on March 12 in which he tallied a pair of assists.
Goehring posted a career-high nine goals in his senior season alongside three assists. During his career at SHU, he has skated in 113 games, with 16 goals and 18 assists. He has scored the game-winners in the past two CT Ice Tournament matches first against Quinnipiac in 2020 followed by the Pioneers' victory against Yale in 2022.
Dawson heads into his senior year at SHU with four goals and 15 assists across 76 career games. He tallied one multi-point game at Air Force this season on November 20. In his first-year season, he had a three-point night at Mercyhurst with.
The Pioneers also highlighted their team award winners on Sunday. Braeden Tuck received the Peter Downey Award which is presented to the player who best served the finest traditions of the program through sportsmanship, spirit, and ability as exemplified by the late Peter Downey.
The Coaches Award is presented to the player whose determination and desire has contributed most to the team morale and spirit went to Dante Palecco.
The Most Valuable Player Award went to Neil Shea as he was a second-team All-AHA honoree and AHA Scoring Champion.
Four Pioneers captured the Scholar Athlete Award as Adam Tisdale, Dante Fantauzzi, Ryan Doolin and Conner Hutchison each exemplified what it meant to give 100% on the ice and in the classroom.
The Best Defensive Player Award was given to Logan Britt. The junior transfer from Quinnipiac stood as the top defenseman for the Pioneers during the season as he led the d-men in points with 21 off three goals and 18 assists. He tied for third in the AHA in assists and was ninth in assists per game with 0.54.
Hunter Sansbury earned the Rookie of the Year Award as he led all Pioneer rookies in assists with 10. The first-year defenseman was named AHA Rookie of the Week on October 18, 2021 for his play at Boston University which he posted five blocked shots.
The final award of the evening was given to John Jaworski for the Most Improved Player Award. He had a breakout season with 17 points in his sophomore season recording nine goals and eight assists. In his first-year at SHU he posted one assist in 16 games played.
