
Grant & Howard Collect NEC Weekly Honors

Pioneers defeated Dartmouth, 38-31, in overtime on Saturday.
SOMERSET, N.J. – On Saturday the Sacred Heart University football team rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat Dartmouth. Monday, the Pioneers reap the rewards of their victory as Malik Grant was named Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Ernest Howard picked up Defensive Player of the Week.
For Grant, a native of the Bronx, NY, it's his first award of the season and the sixth of his career. The Absecon, NJ native Howard earned his first career accolade. In addition, he was an honorable mention for the FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player of the Week. Saint Francis' Makai Jackson was named Rookie of the Week and Michael Coney from LIU picked up Special Teams Player of the Week.
Against Dartmouth, Grant scored all three of his touchdowns in the second half, including a one-yard plunge in overtime that was the game-winner. The Walter Payton Award candidate rushed for 103 yards on 20 carries as he tied his career-high with the three scores. His first touchdown was a 10-yard run on 3rd & 5 to start the comeback.
Howard shut the door on Dartmouth's chances of tying the game in overtime as he intercepted Big Green quarterback Nick Howard on fourth down. It was his first career interception. Howard produced a career-high 11 tackles, including two for a loss, to take over the NEC lead with 35 stops that ranks him 41st in the country.
Sacred Heart is back at home Saturday to take on Norfolk State at 1 p.m.
