Molly Elmore Receives Honorable Mention
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — NEWHA recognized Kelly Solak as Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts opening weekend against No. 9 Clarkson.
In two games on Sept. 23 and 24, Solak blocked six shots in total and handed out an assist in Saturday's contest with the Golden Knights. She is the reigning NEWHA Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in plus-minus last year with a plus-23 rating.
The graduate student is serving as a captain this year for the Pioneers. The defenseman has skated in both games this season, posting an assist and a point coming in a 2-1 loss from the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon.
Assistant Captain Nicole Guidi also played a massive role in last weekend's opening games against Clarkson, blocking multiple shots sent on goal. In both Friday and Saturdays games, her enduring style of play in front of goaltenders Molly Elmore and Carly Greene contributed to the stingy defense that SHU displayed all weekend long. Nicole was also vital in the teams attack against Clarkson assisting on the goal that was scored by Delani MacKay in Saturday's 2 to 1 contest.
Molly Elmore received Honorable Mention after starting in only her second game on Friday. Elmore posted 47 saves, nearly doubling her total career saves which was 28 over 11 total games.
