Pioneers defeat Emmanuel and Wisconsin Stevens Point
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team continues to hold its own with the best programs in the country. The eighth-ranked Pioneers posted a pair of victories on day one of the NWCA National Duals at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
Sacred Heart opened with an emphatic 38-7 win over #15 Emmanuel but dropped a 38-7 decision to second-ranked North Central. The Pioneers wrapped up the day by downing Wisconsin Stevens Point, 35-11.
The two triumphs improve the Pioneers' record to 13-3
In the opening contest against Emmanuel, the Pioneers won the first eight matches. SHU's first four wins came via tech fall while sixth-ranked Alexandra Fitzgerald at 130 pounds pinned her opponent. Madison Sandquist only need 27 seconds to pin Aalijiah Pineda at 155 pounds.
After trading victories in the first four bouts against Wisconsin Stevens Point, the Pioneers won the last six contests to put the team decision out of reach. Eighth-ranked Aaliyah Payne-Parris got the match started with a fall in just 78 seconds at 101 pounds. Veronica Whitacre only needed 1:07 to pin Addison Young at 136 pounds. Cara Broadus and Jacklyn Smith wrapped up the match with a pair of pins in under a minute.
The second time was not the charm against second-ranked North Central. The lone victory came at 130 pounds where Fitzgerald recorded 14-4 tech fall against Sara Sterner.
The win over UWSP puts the Pioneers into Saturday's consolation bracket semifinals. Sacred Heart will face Presbyterian in the first women's dual meet between NCAA Division I schools.
