2V8+ highlights the day with historic finish
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-- The Sacred Heart University women's rowing team had a historic day at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The 2V8+ highlighted the day by earning second place out of all Division 1 teams in the event, capturing third overall, with a time of 13:42.2, a mere 0.9 seconds behind Temple University (13:41.3) on their home course. This is the first medal in any category, any boat at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philly, one of the largest and historic races in North America.
The V8+ earned fifth out of 13 in the championship eights with a time of 13:12.2, the best finish ever for Sacred Heart in an event that included the Danish National Team's 8+.
The 3V8+ competed in the same race as the 2V8+, going up against many teams' first and second varsity boats, and finished 17th out of 42 with a time of 14:22.8.
"As they launched, we knew they would do well, but as results rolled in, it was still exciting and surprising to see them perform and crush it at a big race," said Head Coach Lucas Wilhelm about the 2V8+. "I'm proud of the way our 2V came together with rowers from all four classes to put something together bigger than themselves. Any day you walk away with a silver medal from one of the biggest regattas in the country is a good day."
"Our Flagship raced well, rowing long, strong, and fearlessly in a field that included powerhouses like the Danish National Team," continued Wilhelm. "They outperformed even my high standards, and I am excited to see where winter takes them."
The novice 8+ earned 10th out of 19 with a time of 15:37.3 in an event that featured many teams' top first-year rowing recruits, while the Pios had a boat with true walk-ons and sport-transfer athletes.
"With a boat full of former multi-sport athletes, I'm really proud of how they developed in rowing this season and performed admirably at the Head of the Schuylkill in a competitive frosh field," first-year/novice Coach Stephanie Allgood added about our frosh/novice 8+. "I can't wait to see them develop further through the winter into the spring season."
"In a field of top varsity crews, this boat not only held their own but came out on top of 25 teams with a hard-fought performance," Assistant Coach Dawson Shyne-Appignani about our 3V8+. "To see them come together in a new line-up this past week and exceed my expectations so thoroughly while still feeling like they had more to improve on makes me beyond excited for what's to come this winter."
The Pioneers fall season is now complete and will race again during the spring.
