SHU Racks up Five All-Americans on Day One of Nationals

The Pios are seventh in the team standings after day one
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 9-ranked Sacred Heart University women's wrestling team racked up a whopping five All-Americans on day one of the 2023 NCWWC National Championships.
Earning All-America honors for the Pios today were Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101), Alexandra Fitzgerald (130), Madison Sandquist (155), Cara Broadus (170), and Jacklyn Smith (191). Payne-Parris, Fitzgerald, and Broadus all earned their first career All-America honor, while Sandquist and Smith have won it two years in a row.
After Friday's action, the Pioneers sit in seventh place with 42.5 points as a team. No. 2 North Central (IL) paces the event after day one with 113.5 points, 10 points clear of No. 1 King in second.
The first Pio to earn All-America status was No. 8 Payne-Parris, who picked up wins over Kinsey Smith of Chadron (Fall 1:44) and Chloe Kitagawa of Gannon at 101 pounds, the latter clinching her a top-eight finish. Her lone loss came to No. 1 Jessica Corredor of King in the quarters.
No. 8 Fitzgerald (130) was the next Pioneers to be named All-American, as she defeated Limestone's Hannah Mains with a 36-second pin in her opener and Augsburg's Autumn Flanigan in her third bout. Fitzgerald's lone setback came in the quarterfinals against No. 1 Alexis Janiak of Aurora.
At 155 pounds, No. 8 Sandquist earned her second All-America honor by sandwiching a pair of wins around a setback against No. 1 Marlynne Deede of Augsburg. The sophomore first earned a 10-0 tech fall over Isabella Badon of Presbyterian before pinning Stephanie Floor of Gannon in 5:49.
No. 6 Broadus collected her first career All-America honor with two wins today at 170 pounds. She began the day with a 14-4 tech fall over Limestone's Journey Land before falling to No. 3 Emily Cue of Simon Fraser in the quarters. The junior bounced back in a big way by handing Aubrey Yauger of Texas Women's University a 16-6 tech fall loss to be named an All-American.
No. 8 Smith opened the event by making quick work of Tiffin's Alexia Swisher with a pin in just 20 seconds. Unfortunately for the sophomore, she ran into No. 1-ranked Sydnee Kimber of McKendree in the quarterfinals and suffered a loss, sending her to the consolation bracket. In her first consolation match, she handed No. 6 Nia Crosdale of King a loss in a 6-5 classic to earn All-America status.
The last remaining Pio to earn a win today was Julia Mullane, who bounced back from an opening loss to No. 6 Holly Beaudoin of Colorado Mesa by beating Emmanuel's Gianna Anaya with an 11-0 tech fall.
Rounding out the Pios' competitors today were Taylor McCormick (109), Ahsia Torres (109), No. 8 Nohea Moniz (116), and Temi Sanusi (143). McCormick, Torres, and Moniz all made their National Championship debuts, while Sanusi competed last season.
Day two of the NCWWC National Championships is slated to begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the championship semifinals.
