SHU adds more than 450 games of experience
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (July 5, 2023) – The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team will welcome eight transfers to the roster for the 2023-24 season. Joining the red and white for the program's 31st season of varsity competition are Mikey Adamson (Massachusetts), Mark Cheremeta (Ohio State), Chase Clark (Quinnipiac), Blake Dangos (Arizona State), Liam Izyk (Boston College), Tyler Spott (Northeastern), Garrett Sundquist (Providence) and TJ Walsh (RPI).
Combined, the octet brings 451 games of collegiate experience and 118 points (36-82-118) with them to Fairfield. The group includes five graduate transfers and a trio of athletes who will transfer in as sophomores.
"We feel we have bolstered our lineup significantly with the transfers we have added to our group," said head coach C.J. Marottolo. "Each one of them brings tremendous value to their positions and, most importantly, we feel they will transition seamlessly into our team."
Adamson will join the Pioneers as a sophomore, after spending his freshman season in Hockey East. The defenseman logged 11 games for the Minutemen last season and tallied two points on a goal and an assist.
Cheremeta moves to his third school as a graduate transfer, as he spent three years at Ohio State after lacing them up for Boston University as a freshman way back in 2018-19. The forward comes to SHU with 96 games of college experience and 35 points (10-25-35), though he dressed just six times for the Buckeyes a year ago.
The understudy on Quinnipiac's national championship team, Clark saw action in nine games as a freshman for the Bobcats, while backing up the ECAC's Goaltender of the Year. In limited action, Clark stopped 21 of 25 shots and posted a 3.06 goals-against average.
Another incoming sophomore, Dangos will be covering the most distance to get to SHU, after suiting up in the desert for his freshman campaign. The blue-liner and St. Louis native logged 20 games for the Sun Devils last winter, with one assist.
Izyk is the lone incoming transfer who has already played at Martire Family Arena, as he assisted on the overtime winner when BC spoiled the Opening Night party with a 3-2 win back on Jan. 14. An incoming grad transfer, Izyk is on to his third school as well, as he initially skated for Alabama Huntsville in that program's penultimate season in 2019-20. In all, across one year with the Chargers and three with the Eagles, the forward has totaled 10-13-23 over 96 college games.
Spott will provide some important experience to the Pioneer defensive corps, as he arrives in Fairfield after a four-year Hockey East career. The Toronto native played 112 games for the Huskies, including 37 as a junior in 2021-22, and has 12 points (2-10-12), 82 shots and a +8 rating to his name.
Sundquist will give SHU another option on the blue line, though the incoming junior arrives with the least collegiate experience of any of the bunch. After missing his entire freshman year due to injury, Sundquist skated just twice for the Friars last season, though he did log an assist and go +2 in the limited action.
Rounding out the group is Walsh, another forward who will be joining his third different program and is the highest scorer of the incoming group. He was a two-year teammate of Spott's at Northeastern, before transferring to RPI, where he logged 71 games over the last two seasons. In all, Walsh has tallied 13-31-44 over 106 collegiate games.
SHU will open its 31st season of competition in October. Individual game tickets are expected to go on sale in August.
