Pioneers Fall to Broncs at Home Opener

Olliver Persson scores late penalty kick

Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team fell to Rider, 2-1, in the home opener Tuesday evening. Olliver Persson's late goal on the penalty was not enough to edge the Broncs.

Of Note:
The Pioneers controlled the first half of the game, outshooting the Broncs, 9-2 and 3-1 on goal. Sacred Heart saw a couple of close chances around the eight-minute mark when Koke Gracia Martinez shot hit the left post and Persson rebounded the ball and shot again, but was saved by keeper, Adam Salama.
 
After a scoreless half, Rider put up two goals to take the 2-0 lead. Both goals were score off corner kicks scored by Ethan Shaw and assisted by Saad Chaouki.
 
In the 88th minute, Persson went up for a header in the box and was fouled by Adel Al Masude resulting in a goal from the penalty kick.
 
The Pioneers earned 10 corner kicks compared to the Broncs' three. Both teams earned five shots on goal.
