Velleco Breaks 500 Freestyle School Record on Opening Day of Gompei Invite

Velleco secured first place in the 500 freestyle
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University women's swim and dive team opened its mid-season invitational at the Gompei Invite hosted by WPI Friday.
Friday's events consisted of the 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and synchronized diving. The top 30 swimmers from prelims advanced to finals.
Sophia Velleco broke her own 500 freestyle school record with a time 4:57.20, while also securing the gold for the Pioneers.
Rosemery Nieto also had a top three performance in the 200-breaststroke finishing third with a time of 2:22.99. Elle Gindlesperger finished ninth in the breaststroke in a time of 2:30.18.
Melanie Sanchez secured both a SHU all-time top four finish and fourth place finish in the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.44. Also in the butterfly, Emma Haas placed ninth with a time of 58.48.
All swimmers who competed in the 200 IM returned for finals. Daniella Palamaro paced the Pios with a sixth-place finish in a time of 2:10.77. Emma Chambers was shortly behind her in tenth place in a time of 2:14.69.
Emma Haas finished nineth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.62.
The 200-medley relay of Kristen Baker, Nieto, Haas, and Velleco finished fifth with a time of 1:46.84.
