Velleco Breaks Second School Record on Day Three of NECs

Pioneers sit in fifth after day three
GENEVA, Ohio – The Sacred Heart University women's swimming and diving team continued the momentum heading into day three of the 2024 Northeast Conference (NEC) Swimming and Diving Championships. The Pioneers dropped to fifth place with another record-breaking swim from Sophia Velleco in the 200-yard freestyle.
Velleco secured her second school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.65 finishing fourth in the event. Maeve English also placed in the 200-yard freestyle at 19th with a time of 1:55.99. Right behind her was Kate Bell in 22nd with a time of 1:57.18.
Emma Chambers competed in the 400-yard IM B final finishing 12th with a time of 4:37.44. In the B final, finishing 14th and 16th were Melanie Sanchez and Daniella Palamaro with times of 4:38.51 and 4:42.71, respectively. Olivia Velleco improved upon her time from the morning with a time of 4:44.33 finishing 22nd.
First year Emma Haas now sits second all-time at SHU in the 100-yard butterfly from her morning swim with a time of 57.10. She finished in eighth place with a time of 57.52. Fellow first year Abigail Hernandez posted a time of 58.26 for a 14th-place finish. Competing in the C final, Meghan Hammarlund and Devon Corvaia finished 14th and 17th with times of 57.92 and 59.56, respectively.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Ella Krikorian, Haas, Emma Davis, and Emma McCall finished fifth with a time of 1:37.00.
After the third day of action, Central Connecticut State owns the lead with a score of 752.5.
The Pioneers return for day four of NECs tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for prelims including the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke and 3M diving.
