LAST TIME OUT
The Pioneers return to Connecticut after participating in the challenging Spiro Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro. SHU ended the tournament with a 1-4 record, but three losses came by two or fewer runs. Sacred Heart's win was a 3-2 triumph over Drexel on the final day, as Victoria LoPinto's first career home run broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth inning. Emily Carroll led the way for the Pioneers with a .467 average (7-for-15) as SHU's lone player to record a hit in all five games. In the circle, Emily Heath earned Sacred Heart's win with a 4.0-inning relief appearance, allowing just one hit.
SHOWING SOME POWER
SHU tallied four home runs on the weekend from four different hitters. Carroll, LoPinto, Charlene Davis and Morgan Teodosio all went yard for the Pioneers, with the latter three all hitting their first career homers. Carroll hit her 13th career blast against Ohio, starting her senior season off like she ended her stellar junior campaign.
WELCOMING NEW PIOS
A trio of Pioneers made their debuts at the Spiro Classic. First years Jess Brown, Cierra Bender and Savannah Moore all hit the diamond for the first time this weekend. Brown led the group, appearing in all five games and maintaining a .375 (3-for-8) with an RBI. Bender appeared in four contests and scored SHU's first run in its win over Drexel after a double in the top of the first, while Moore scored a run in the Pios' first game against Drexel on Saturday.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
The Rams head into Sunday's game with a 4-6 overall record through 10 games this season. Fordham beat Southern Miss. twice at the River City Leadoff Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., and Santa Clara and Portland State at the Silicon Valley Classic in Santa Clara, Calif. Sophomore infielder Eva Koratsis leads the team with a .400 batting average (8-for-20) with three doubles and six RBIs. Graduate pitcher Devon Miller has been lights out in the circle with a 1.73 ERA over 28.1 innings pitched. She owns a 2-1 record and has struck out 16 batters.
UP NEXT
Following Sunday, the Pioneers will next head to sunny Florida to play in the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. SHU's opening game of the tournament is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1, against St. Bonaventure.
