Junior piles up league-best 22 shots in seven games
BOSTON (February 27, 2024) – For the second straight month, junior Hunter Sansbury (Lomita, Calif.) of the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team has been named as Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Month, as announced on Tuesday afternoon by the league office.
Sansbury played in all seven games for the Pios in February and collected 22 blocked shots, which was the highest total in the league for the month. He also chipped in three points (1-2-3) at the offensive end, with the goal serving as the game-winner in a 3-1 victory over American International on Feb. 3.
Sansbury blocked at least four shots in four of the month's seven games and was at his best in the aforementioned Feb. 3 contest against AIC. In addition to scoring the game-winner against the Yellow Jackets, he blocked seven shots, which matched his career high. It was the third time this season Sansbury had blocked seven shots and capped an 11-block, three-point weekend for the blueliner, as the Pioneers swept away AIC at the Martire Family Arena.
On the season, Sansbury has played in all 34 games for the Pios and has contributed 15 points, on five goals and 10 assists. His 98 blocked shots lead Atlantic Hockey by a wide margin and rank second in the nation as well. Sansbury is up to 215 career blocks, a figure which ranks ninth all-time in Atlantic Hockey.
It is Sansbury's third career selection as Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Month (February 2023, January 2024).
SHU (14-17-3, 14-10-2 AHA) has a first-round bye in the Atlantic Hockey tournament and will host a best-of-three quarterfinal series against an opponent to be determined on March 8-10 at Martire Family Arena. Puck drop is 7 p.m. all three nights and tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
