Softball Falls in Close Ones to Manhattan and Siena Friday

The Pios dropped game one by two runs and one run in game two
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Sacred Heart University softball team fell in two games at the Spring Games on Friday, suffering a 4-2 loss to Manhattan in the first game and a 1-2 setback to Siena in the second.

Game 1: MC 4, SHU 2
Pitchers:
Sam Kowalski (SHU) - (L, 4.2 innings pitched, 4 earned runs, 2 strikeouts, 3-5 record)
Jenna Pfister (SHU) - (1.1 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 1 strikeouts)

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning with a solo homer from Cierra Bender.
The Jaspers took control of the game in the third with three runs on a double, single and an RBI ground out.
Sacred Heart brought another run in with an RBI groundout from Jess Brown to plate Victoria LoPinto from third to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, Manhattan added an insurance run in the fifth to secure a 4-2 victory.
Game 2: SC 2, SHU 1 (8 inn.)

Emily Heath (SHU) - (L, 8.0 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 3 strikeouts, 1-4 record)
Allison Sparkman (SC) - (W, 8.0 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 6 strikeouts, 3-0 record)
Top Performers:
Cierra Bender (SHU) – 1-3, 1 run
Of Note:
Following an extended pitchers' duel that spanned 5.5 scoreless innings, the Pioneers broke the scoring drought with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Following three consecutive singles to lead off the inning, Carly Koltko's RBI ground out put SHU up 1-0.
Unfortunately, the Saints scored a run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. In the eighth, Siena added another run to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Pioneers could not answer in the home half of the frame, as the Saints took the game 2-1.
Emily Heath did her best to get SHU the win in the pitching circle, going all 8.0 innings. The sophomore allowed just one earned run and struck out three.
Up Next
The Pioneers continue the Spring Games with two games on Saturday, March 9. SHU will first play Troy at 3 p.m. before battling Columbia at 5:30 p.m.
