SHU's 1V8 made the Grand Finals to secure sixth out of 26
CHERRY HILL, N.J.—After races were canceled on Saturday, the Sacred Heart University rowing team was left with a condensed schedule on Sunday at the Knecht Cup. The Pioneers handled the change well and had an outstanding showing, finishing sixth overall, earning a spot in the Grand Finals.
The 4V+ finished third in their heat with a time of 8:10.68, which is competitive across the competition and will match up well with the other teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
The second varsity 8+ event was very competitive, and the winds started to pick up. SHU had a tough start with wind at the start line, leading the 2V8 to a bobble start. Fighting back the entire race, they had a strong pace and moved back into a close race and finished fourth in the heat at 7:15.82.
The varsity 8+ raced with fire in their heat, finshing in second with a time of 6:45.94 and qualified for the final. SHU beat conference rivals, Marist along with several other good crews. In the Grand Final, the field of 27 was whittled down to six, and the Pioneers were one of them. Very windy conditions caused certain lanes to have more protection, but SHU handled them valiantly. The Pios were able to race last year's MAAC Champions, Jacksonville, in the next lane over. The V8+ finished sixth in the final at 7:00.28 where they were 3.3 seconds behind the Dolphins.
"After a long training block, I am happy with the way our Pios raced on our opening day," said Head Coach Luke Wilhelm. "Every boat we launched raced aggressively and performed well. We have a lot of work to do to put out full race plans, but I think the initial jumping-off point is exciting. These athletes love to race! Cheer us on this weekend in Worcester!"
The Pioneers are back in action next Saturday, April 20, at the Holy Cross Invitational.
