Reliever collects first NEC weekly award
MADISON, N.J. (May 7, 2024) – Graduate student right-handed reliever Jake McDowell (Brookfield, Conn.) of the Sacred Heart University baseball team has been named Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on May 5, as announced on Tuesday by the conference office.
McDowell made exactly one appearance last week, but it was as important as they come. The Pios had already dropped the first game of their pivotal Friday doubleheader at Wagner, and were trailing the second game 4-1 as well, when McDowell took over with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fourth. He got out of the jam while allowing only one further run.
From there, he was lights out, as he stayed on and pitched the remainder of the game without allowing so much as a hit, never mind a run. McDowell faced 18 batters while recording the final 18 outs of the night and struck out five against just one walk over his six innings on the hill. SHU rallied with four runs in the fifth and two more in the eighth to reward him with the victory.
On the season, McDowell has made 13 appearances on the mound, including three midweek starts. Over 35 innings of work, he has allowed 14 runs (13 earned) on 27 hits, walked 17 and struck out 31 en route to a 3.34 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.
It was McDowell's first career NEC weekly award. It marked the second time this year SHU has earned the league's Pitcher of the Year award, as Jake Babuschak earned the honor in mid-March.
First-place SHU (26-20, 20-7 NEC) is home on Tuesday afternoon against Stony Brook at 4 p.m.
