SHU welcomes Carter and his family to the Pioneer Community
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University head coach Mark Nofri announced a new team member, signing seven-year-old Carter Harbron through Team IMPACT.
Carter, who recently completed treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma, was officially introduced at a signing day press conference on Wednesday, August 28 on Campus Field. He will participate in many activities with the team including games, practices, and other team events.
Team IMPACT, a national non-profit organization, has developed a unique multiyear program that matches children facing serious illness and disability with college athletic teams across the country. Based on a clinical model, Team IMPACT guides a symbiotic relationship between teams and children focused on socialization, empowerment, and resilience.
"Team IMPACT is excited to see Carter join the Pioneers," said Emma Simches, Regional Director of Programs, Northeast at Team IMPACT. "We are proud to work with Sacred Heart University, their athletic department, and coaching staff to create lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes between student-athletes and their Team IMPACT teammates."
Sacred Heart has worked with Team IMPACT for the past five years, matching 11 children across its men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's wrestling, men's basketball, baseball, softball, and football teams.
"We are thrilled to have Carter join our Sacred Heart Football family," said Head Coach Mark Nofri. "This Team IMPACT program is a great organization and I'm glad we are a part of it. Carter's energy and enthusiasm fits perfectly with our team and we are here to support Carter in any way we can."
