Women’s Volleyball Takes Marathon Match against Kent State

Luginbuhl tied the program points record, finished with a career-high 30 kills
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – It was a knock-down, drag-out affair in Sacred Heart University women's volleyball's five-set win over Kent State on Saturday, as the third and fourth sets featured a combined 118 points.
It was a career day for standout senior Camryn Luginbuhl, who tied the program record in points in the five-set match with 35. The only other Pioneer to tally this many points was Sarah Krufka in 2015. Luginbuhl finished the match with a career-best 30 kills, along with six total blocks and one ace. Following today's match, she is up to 1,095 career points.
A handful of other Pioneers tallied career-highs against the Golden Flashes. Gaby Zovko racked up a career-high 53 assists with 12 digs in a double-double. Cristina Montanez posted a career-best nine blocks, while Emily Sawyer logged a career-high eight kills. Miliani Villarreal tallied a season-high 27 digs at the libero position.

How It Happened:
The Golden Flashes owned the lead at the start of the first set, 14-10, before SHU rallied with a 5-0 run to take the lead late, 22-21. A service error was the lone Kent State point in an 8-1 Pioneers' surge as Sacred Heart took the first set 25-22.
SHU took an early lead in the second, 7-4, but the Golden Flashes were ready with an answer, taking an 11-9 lead in the next couple of points. The Pioneers were prepared with a 12-6 push to go up 21-17 late. Kent State did not make things easy on the Pioneers, but SHU took a 2-0 lead after posting a 25-23 victory in the second.
The third and fourth set went the way of Kent State, as the Golden Flashes won 33-31 and 28-26.
With the match on the line, Sacred Heart opened the fifth with a 9-2 run. With a commanding lead, the Pios held on to take the win, 15-8, sealing a five-set victory for SHU.
