Fairfield, Conn. – Senior right side Lauren Hubert led the Pioneers with 18 kills and added 15 digs for her team-leading 11th double double, leading the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a five-set win over the visiting Saint Peter's Peacocks. With the win, SHU improves to 5-2 in the Metro Conference.
Hubert was one of two Pioneers to finish in double figures offensively with sophomore outside Abbie Hagedorn following her with 14 kills. The difference maker down the stretch for the Pios came in the form of rookie outside Renata Montini who came off the bench in the third set and rallied for eight kills hitting at a .778 clip with a single error in nine total attempts.
Marshalling the Pios offense on the night was sophomore setter Addy Franz who finished with 44 assists and added to that with nine digs and five kills. Junior libero Miliani Villarreal led all players in the match with 25 digs, her second straight match with 20+.

How it Happened
After trading the opening four points of the match, the Peacocks used a pair of rallies to open up a 10-4 lead that was unsurmountable for the Pioneers. Despite the large deficit, Sacred Heart used a pair of small runs late in the match to pull within a pair at 21-19 before Siant Peter's put the first set in the books with a 25-20 victory.
The second set would fall in favor of Saint Peter's from the first serve as they opened up an early 7-1 lead and never allowed Sacred Heart to pull closer than three. That three point deficit again came late in the set and was courtesy of a stretch with the Pios taking five of six points to make it a 23-20 margin. An Addison Baglio kill would close out the set and allow for a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 final score.
The third set was the most closely contested throughout with 11 ties and three lead changes before Sacred Heart extended the match with a 26-24 victory. Coming down the stretch, the Pioneers had a match point opportunity at 24-22 which forced a Saint Peter's timeout. Coming out of that break, the Peacocks battled to knot the score at 24 and forcing the Pios to call for time. This time around it was the Pioneers who rallied out of the timeout as Montini came off the bench to begin her late match rally with her first kill. Hagedorn followed with one of her own, sending the match into the fourth set.
The fourth set went back-and-forth in the early going before the Pioneers began to break open a lead following the media timeout. Coming out of that break with a three-point lead, SHU added two more to make it a five-point match at 17-12. Each of the next three service rotations for Sacred Heart added an extra point to the Pios lead before Hubert capped off the fourth set at 25-16 with a kill. Â
Despite surrendering the first point of the fifth set, the Pioneers rallied early with a pair of three point runs led to a 6-2 lead and forced a Peacocks timeout form which they would come out and score the next three points and force a SHU timeout. That break in the action paid off for Sacred Heart as they came out with a kill from Hubert.
A three-point rally on the next rotation extended Sacred Heart's lead out to 10-6 from which it would grow to a five and eventually a six point lead at the end with Hagedorn going back-to-back for the final two points of the match and securing the first back-to-back five-set wins of the year.
